Why Our Program?

Texas State University has made materials science and engineering research, education, and commercialization a priority. We recognize that interdisciplinary research in advanced materials is crucial for the discovery of innovative solutions for pressing issues in the areas of energy, environment, health, and security. Emerging advanced materials have the potential to dramatically affect all segments of the economy. We are training the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs to quickly market new materials for solutions needed today and drive economic development, not only in Central Texas, but across the United States and internationally.

Message From The Director

It is my pleasure to introduce you to the Materials Science, Engineering, and Commercialization Program (MSEC) within the College of Science and Engineering at Texas State University.

We are in the midst of a materials revolution, both in the way new materials are developed and in the impact that these materials will have as we face the many challenges of the 21st century.

Interdisciplinary Curriculum

The Materials Science, Engineering, and Commercialization (MSEC) Program at Texas State is an integrated effort based on the university's Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Physics, Engineering, Engineering Technology, and business school programs. The MSEC program's mission is to train graduate scientists and engineers to perform interdisciplinary research while equipping them to emerge as effective entrepreneurial leaders in the advancement of 21st-century global discovery and innovation.

Our Research

Our program research will continue to have a positive impact on the Texas economy and attract significant federal research funding as well as produce innovative commercial endeavors in civilian, defense, and security applications. With a focus on applied research, industrial outreach, and entrepreneurial training, Texas State is uniquely positioned to offer this combination of skills - research with relevance.

Our Goals

Goals of the MSEC program are to provide the graduates with:

  • technical skills necessary to conduct high quality research
  • an orientation toward interdisciplinary research
  • a set of business tools and knowledge of business practice
  • technical project and business management skills
